The Wasmuth Publications

There is a certain amount of confusion over the so-called 'Wasmuth portfolio'. There are two, separate, works, both originally printed by Wasmuth in 1911: The 'Wasmuth portfolio' was a more expensive, smaller print run; in the original edition it consisted of a pair of volumes (two folios). (Most later reprints condense them into a single volume.) The 'little Wasmuth' was a cheaper work, produced in larger numbers.

Since the first Wasmuth publication was originally printed in two volumes, and there are also two different Wasmuth publications, references to terms such as 'the two Wasmuth volumes' can therefore be quite confusing: it is often not clear whether this means the original two-volume 'Wasmuth portfolio', or the set of both Wasmuth publications.

To increase the complexity, there are two substantially different initial editions of the 'little Wasmuth', both published by Wasmuth! One is the European edition (113 pages, 148 illustrations, one in color): an early revision, it was printed in a full run, after which Wright decided he was not happy with it, and allowed Wasmuth to sell it only in Europe; it is titled "Frank Lloyd Wright - Chicago". The other is the American edition (141 pages, 193 illustrations, ultimately 163 halftone pictures): it is a modifed version with extra pictures which Wright felt met his standards; it is confusingly titled "Frank Lloyd Wright: Ausgefuhrte Bauten" (the original German title, even though it is the American edition).

Finally, to bring things to a final and utter state of absolute chaos, later reprints of these two works, as well as reprints of the 'Wendingen Edition' (discussed below), used various titles seemingly interchangably, with the result that it is utterly impossible to tell what a volume entitled, say, "The Early Work", contains, without also knowing the publisher and date.

The Wendingen Edition

This originated as seven special issues of the Dutch art magazine Wendingen, edited by the architect Hendrikus Theodorus Wijdeveld, in 1925. They were collected together and reprinted (numerous times), producing a work known as the 'Wendingen Edition'.

It contains numerous photographs and plans of Wright buildings, including the Larkin Building, Unity Temple, the Coonley House, the Robie House, Taliesn East, the Willets House, Midway Gardens, the Martin House, the Imperial Hotel, and Hollyhock House (Barnsdale Residence).

It also includes pieces by the publisher of Wendingen, H. Th. Wijdeveld ("Some Flowers for Frank Lloyd Wright"); Frank Lloyd Wright (various, including "In the Cause of Architecture", and "To My European Co-Workers"); Lewis Mumford ("The Social Background of Frank Lloyd Wright"); H. P. Berlage ("Frank Lloyd Wright"); J. J. P. Oud ("The Influence of Frank Lloyd Wright on the Architecture of Europe"); and Louis Sullivan ("Concerning the Imperial Hotel", and "Reflections on the Tokyo Disaster").

Two essays (R. Mallet-Stevens, "Frank Lloyd Wright and the New Architecture", and Erich Mendelsohn, "Frank Lloyd Wright") included in the original edition (and some later ones) are not in English (French and German respectively), but are provided in translation in the most recent edition [Gramercy, 1994].

The first edition was edited and designed by Wijdeveld, and printed by Joh. Enschede. The Japanese-style binding was designed by Wright himself. The Horizon Press edition of 1965 is a de luxe version, with a slipcase, and leather label lettered in gilt. The Bramhall edition contains an essay by Olgivanna Lloyd Wright describing Wright's reaction to the original Wendingen edition. The Gramercy edition contains translated versions of two articles, a new introduction by Nancy Frazier, and omits the Olgivanna Lloyd Wright essay.
